Italian Bakery (@italianbakeryed)

fresh baguette sandwichFeaturing a scrumptious selection of pastries, deserts and made-to-order sandwiches, Italian Bakery has been adding inches to Edmontonian waistlines for over 50 years with two locations, one in McCauley and the main location in Beacon Heights. Our favorite selection among the delectable treats available are the build your own sandwiches on fresh baked bread. While your sandwich is being made you can cruise around the shop and pick up a few groceries as The Italian Bakery features a wide selection of Italian staples including olive oils, dried pastas and imported foods. While you’re at it, you might as well pick out your desert to finish off your lunch and we highly recommend the cannoli and rum balls. Best in the city! www.italianbakeryedm.com

Duchess Bake Shop (@duchessbakeshop)

Located in the Westmount neighborhood in Central Edmonton, Duchess Bakery has been consistently ranked among the top bakeries in the city and often the country. Everything the bakery sells is completely decadent and speaks to the French heritage of the owners whose passion for fresh baked goods can be found from the smallest (and tastiest) macarons, to the flaky and buttery croissants all the way to the shops signature dish, The Duchess Cake; a chiffon cake featuring raspberry jam, whipped cream and marzipan.  Stop in for a lunchtime sandwich or meat pie and a fresh brewed coffee and you’re likely to walk away with a box full of cookies, handmade marshmallows, madeleines or a tart or two. Our favorite has to be the buttery and flaky croissant. www.duchessbakeshop.com

Artistic Bake Shop (@ArtisticBakery)

mix of breadsThe family owned and operated Artistic Bake Shop has been serving Edmontonians since two brothers first opened shop in 1966 and decided to titillate the taste buds of our city. Located in the Allendale community of South Central Edmonton since 1974, Artistic Bake Shop continues to be a cornerstone of the neighborhood and has an ever expanding clientele that swear by the fresh baked goods. Artistic Bake Shop features a wide array of homemade cookies, pastries, pies and possibly the best 7-layer chocolate cake in the city. Even with the awesome assortment of tasty treats to be had, our pick has to be the fresh baked traditional Bavarian pretzels. These soft and salty snacks are best bought two at a time as you’re likely to be finished the first before you get back to the car and craving a second. Get to the shop early though as these twisted treats tend to sell out fast and in keeping to their commitment to fresh goods, the bakery only makes enough to last the day. www.artisticbakeshop.com

Bon Ton Bakery (@bontonbakery)

This European style bakery refers to itself as “obsessively good” and we have to agree. Bon Ton Bakery is obsessively good and we’re constantly obsessing over their fresh baked decadent deserts and breads. Assortments of sumptuous fancy pastries are available including cake slices, tortes, hazelnut chocolate eclairs and our favorite go to desert: the caramel mascarpone éclair topped with caramel and slivered almonds. What keeps us coming back again and again is the fresh baked-in-store breads. An assortment of European ryes, whole grain and rustic artisanal loaves are baked daily and fill the shop with that wonderful aroma that only comes with fresh baked breads. Our top choice has to be the authentic, chewy and tasty bagels that are made fresh daily in store with an variety of styles in both mini and large sizes. Located between the communities of Jasper Park and Parkview, Bon Ton Bakery remains a popular destination for Edmontonians with a penchant for fresh baked goods. www.bonton.ca

Wild Earth also offers an assortment of homemade soups, fresh salads, pizzas and fresh made sandwiches. The claim to fame for this bustling bistro has to be the decadent homemade cakes. Featuring their popular “Build-a –Cake” program, customers are able to build a cake to their liking with a wide assortment of flavors, toppings and fillings and have Wild Earth bake it in store. Wild Earth Bakery even offers a selection of pre-made deserts, soups and even pizza shells that you can take home and bake in the comfort of your own kitchen, just like the pros. www.wildearthbakery.com
