Ice-cream shops

As we head into July here soon, the weather is certainly making summer known. With temperatures rocketing, and folks trying to stay cool in the hustle and bustle of daily life, we've compiled a few of our favourite ice-cream shops in the city. Stop in on the way home from work, or bring the kids after dinner, and take a flavour adventure!

1.) Block 1912 (@Block1912)

Voted Edmonton's Best Desserts, this popular Whyte Avenue cafe offers up a variety of traditional gelato, as well as non-dairy sorbets and some cutting edge vegan, lactose free and soy-based tofulatis. It's also big on atmosphere, with comfortable and cozy seating, and featuring local artists and musicians.

From fabulous custom cakes to renowned coffee, along with the selection of cold treats, this is a one-stop shop for your fuel-up needs. We recommend: orange creamsicle gelato.

2.) 80 Flavours Ice Cream Truck (@80FlavoursYEG)

While you might find yourself in a line-up during rush hour, the wait is worth it; this ice-cream truck has every flavour under the sun to help you regulate your body temperature. Located at 4014 Gateway Blvd NW, this is a must-stop shop for ice-cream lovers. Park the car and hang out at a picnic tables with the kids. We recommend: superhero or kahula chocolate fudge.

Best gelato Edmonton Italy's First Ice-Cream Machine

Gelato's history in Italy goes as far back as ancient Rome, when ice & snow was carried down from the mountains kept underground. In 1686, the first ice-cream machine was perfected by Sicilian chef Francesco Pocopio dei Coltelli.

3.) Pinocchio (@PinocchioIceCre)

The real deal! Made from scratch, and using cream, this is some of Edmonton's best gelato and is an indulgent splurge that will satisfy the sweet tooth. Dairy-free sorbets are also available. There are a number of locations to buy your own to-go including the Italian Centre, Planet Organic, and Wild Earth Foods. Or stop in at Mandolin Books and Coffee Company, at 112 Ave, to enjoy a scoop, hear live music, chat with friends and browse the shelves. We recommend: champagne sorbet - made with real champagne!

4.) Popbar (@popbar)

After a day of amusement in the West Edmonton Mall, head over to Popbar, where you can enjoy some DIY creations with popsicles or gelato on a stick. These pops are offered on their own or dipped in your topping of choice and covered in mouth-watering toppings. Mini pops are available for the kids, and the only difficulty here will be choosing from the array of topping combinations. We recommend: coffee gelato pop dipped in dark chocolate.

5.) Da Capo (@DaCapoCaffe)

This is a well-established and revered Italian lifestyle caffe on 102 St that is known for its high quality coffees and authentic artisan gelato, made fresh daily. This is a bit more fancy than other family-friendly dessert stops, so save this one for date night! Whether you choose to go for the ice-cream, coffee, or quality wines and beers, you'll enjoy the quiet, modern ambiance and attention to detail. We recommend: We recommend: their signature "affogato" that combines gelato and espresso.
