Edmonton has its fair share of pretty great communities for families. Unlike areas that are great for singletons, young couples or retirees, families have a very specific set of needs when researching great areas to live. They want the neighbourhood to be safe and have a low crime rate, affordable and be within a reasonable proximity to good schools. It’s those requirements that we weighed and measured to come up with the following four best communities to live in Edmonton. Continue reading to find out why.

Safest Edmonton Neighbourhoods by Crime Rates

Using the Edmonton Police Service’s “Neighbourhood Crime Map”, we were surprised at the higher levels of crime of areas such as Strathcona, especially the level of violent crimes. Our top four communities did pretty well considering and none of them had experienced any violent crime such as personal robbery or assault of any kind.

Housing Affordability—Top Edmonton Neighborhoods

Using the house listings, we judged the following on Edmonton’s average family size which currently sits 2.5 according to the Government of Canada’s census data. As such, we eliminated one bedroom homes from the equation as they aren’t family-friendly. All of these homes vary in size, with some of the condos having slightly larger footprints than the single-family detached homes. However, the condos will have condo fees so can work out to slightly more per year in mortgage than the price of the single-family detached homes.

Special note: Some of the areas below do have homes that are even more affordable, you should check each of the pages to see their latest listings.
