The secret is out—Edmonton is one of Canada's coolest cities. With record numbers of young professionals moving here, and a thriving student population at the University of Alberta, more and more people are learning about all the cool things to do in the city, especially during the beautiful summer weather. Here are a few of the many amazing activities for you to check out this summer!
The Edmonton International Jazz Festival
You can check out some of the best musicians from around the world at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival. Running for ten days, from June 23rd to July 2nd, the festival includes shows in a number of classic Edmonton locations, like Churchill Square and Bellamy's Lounge at Chateau Lacombe. Head to the Needle Vinyl Tavern to catch YouTube prodigy Jacob Collier, or spend Canada Day dancing to perennial favourite Gypsophilia!
Fort Edmonton Park
If you've never been to Fort Edmonton Park, or even if it's been a few years, don't miss this opportunity to walk through the history of our city! The park is divided into four streets, each recreating a historical era from the mid-1800s to the 1920s. With recreations of classic Edmonton buildings and actors playing real historical figures, the park will make you feel like a time traveler.
The West Edmonton Mall
No matter how many times you visit the West Edmonton Mall, there's always something else to do. This gigantic mall, one of the largest in the world, includes nearly a thousand stores and a number of other unbelievable attractions:
- An indoor amusement park, complete with a roller coaster
- The world's largest indoor wave pool
- A salt water lagoon where sea lions make their home
- An 18-hole mini-golf course
- An IMAX theatre
With so much to see and do, the West Edmonton Mall will always give you a reason to come back.
Parents and children will love exploring Jurassic Forest's outdoor dinosaur park together. Learn about fossils, experience your own paleontological dig, and discover prehistoric nature at this fun facility. The kids will enjoy the T rex slide and triceratops ride, and parents will be surprised how much they learn! Afterwards, families can compete on the "Race to Extinction" mini-golf course!
The Freewill Shakespeare Festival
There's no better way to enjoy Shakespeare than outdoors, and the Freewill Shakespeare Festival brings that joy to the Heritage Amphitheatre once again in 2017. From June 20th to July 16th, you can enjoy two of Shakespeare's most celebrated comedies, The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Merchant of Venice. Known for their hilarious performances, the Freewill Shakespeare players are certain to have the whole river valley laughing. Best of all, students can attend for free on Sundays!
The Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival
Watch racers of all kinds, from novices to professionals, challenge each other on the North Saskatchewan River in this summer's annual Dragon Boat Festival! From August 18th to 20th, paddlers and non-paddlers alike can enjoy riverside entertainment and a celebration of Edmonton's Chinese community.
The Edmonton Corn Maze
You may associate corn mazes with the fall, but the Edmonton Corn Maze is at its best in August. The corn is still lush and green when it reaches its full height in late summer, making it easier than ever to get lost. Better yet, the crowds are still quite small until September rolls around. The maze is different every year, so even if you're a corn maze veteran, you'll want to discover what tricky corners and dead ends 2017's maze has to offer!
